R1.3.3 to 5 - Fossil fuels, biofuel, and fuel cell

The key ideas:

  • Human has combusted and continue to burn a lot of fossil fuels (which are storage sunlight energy from millions years ago) that produces a lot of carbon dioxide
  • Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas, which means they absorb and trap heat in the atmosphere → global warming → climate change (bad)
  • Biofuel (liquid fuel made from plants) is a potential solution; however, it doesn’t work because of land and input requirements
  • Fuel cell is another potential solution that uses hydrogen and methanol oxidation-reduction reaction (more about this in Redox topic)
