10.1e Physical characteristics of homologous series

A homologous series is a series of compounds of the same family, with the same general formula, which differ from each other by a common structural unit, usually a methylene (CH2) group.

Explanation of the trends in boiling points of members of a homologous series. Think about it in terms of intermolecular forces.

Paper 2 explanation answers:

  • London force increase with the increase in size
  • Chemical properties are similar with homologous series
  • Physical properties (boiling point, melting point, density, viscosity, volatility…) differ. More molecular mass = more London force = higher every except volatility
